As the early traditions of memorial day is to decorate the graves of the soliders with flowers and flags memorial day is also known as Decoration Day. It is celebrated on the last monday in the month of May. Memorial Day is celebrated in the United States in the remembrance for those peoples who died during the war in the military services. The celebration of Decoration day was first started on May 30 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers in the Civil wars. During that first national celebration, former Union Gen. and sitting Ohio Congressman James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried there.
